Pupils write a diary entry from the point of view of Sam recalling the events of Chapter 1 of the novel.

How to use this resource pack:
- Read Chapter 1 of the novel. Discuss.
- Share the WAGOLL with pupils and discuss its features.
- Pupils identify the features of a diary entry using the differentiated Feature Find sheet and answers.
- Pupils plan and write their own diary entry from the point of view of Sam or another character from the story (for example, Billy, Mrs Jenkins, Brandon, Tayo, Jack or Sam’s mum or dad).
Character Profile
Pupils write a character profile about one of the characters in the story.

The model text is about Sam, but pupils could write about the same character or a different one such as Billy or Bandon.

Informal Letter
Pupils write an informal letter based on the events in Chapter 4 of the novel.
The model text contains informal letters from Sam to two different recipients, his friend and his parents. The contrasting model letters provide the opportunity for discussion about writing for a particular audience. Pupils can discuss the similarities and differences between the two letters.
